Steven E. Jones is a civil litigation and business law attorney for Carrillo Law Firm, P.C. He has represented governmental clients, colleges and universities, large companies, local businesses, and private parties in state and federal court. He has also handled business transactions and has served as retained general counsel for several local businesses.
Complex Litigation and Appeals Experience
Mr. Jones has significant general business litigation experience representing clients, either individually or through their insurance carriers, in state and federal court. This includes both employment- and non-employment-related cases. Mr. Jones routinely handles difficult or unique areas of law, sometimes without clear legal precedent. He has experience participating in large e-discovery projects in multi-district litigation. He has defended class action and multi-plaintiff lawsuits brought under the Fair Labor Standards Act and New Mexico Minimum Wage Act. He has represented construction contractors, subcontractors, and private clients in construction-related litigation in state and federal court.
Mr. Jones has extensive experience in employment litigation, on both the employer and employee sides. This includes, for instance, experience managing cases involving employment discrimination and retaliation, business law disputes, and wage and hour issues.
Mr. Jones has quasi-judicial experience, including serving by appointment as the Personnel Appeals Hearing Officer for a city of over 100,000 people. He also has experience drafting appellate briefs and managing all aspects of the appeal process. He also has worked on a wide variety of alternative dispute resolution activities including arbitration, mediation, direct negotiation, and judicial settlement conferences.
Federal Employment Litigation and Negotiation Experience
Mr. Jones has experience dealing with U.S. federal agencies on behalf of clients in a variety of contexts, including administrative proceedings, investigations, and litigation involving agencies such as the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board (MSPB), and U.S. Postal Service (USPS).
Experience Advising and Defending State/Local Agencies and Higher Educational Institutions
Mr. Jones has represented and advised state and local governmental agencies, colleges and universities in New Mexico, in a variety of contexts such as employment law, internal investigations, construction law, property law, student relations, Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) issues, New Mexico Inspection of Public Records Act (IPRA) inquiries and complaints, and general business law matters.
Mr. Jones is a New Mexico alumni interviewer and recruiter for Harvard College. He currently serves as the Harvard College Schools and Scholarships (Admissions) co-chair for New Mexico, and he has previously served as an alumni interviewer for Maryland and for San Mateo County, California. He also has teaching experience as an adjunct faculty member at a local university and as a presenter at attorney continuing legal education courses throughout the state.
